2013 was a great year for Mid-Century Modern day chair reprisals. Bygone designs by Gio Ponti, Richard Neutra, and Arne Jacobsen, among other people, have been untethered from estate and museum archives and given new life by designing makers. Danish brand PP Møbler is the latest, with a reissue of Hans J. Wegner’s Swivel Chair, an workplace chair 1st introduced in 1955. A preposterously artful concoction, comprised of tubular steel, leather, and a slab of sensuously twisted strong wood, the ergonomically-sensitive Swivel Chair “presents enormous challenges for the joiner, the upholsterer and the blacksmith,” says PP Møbler. No such challenges, thankfully, face Wegner’s breathless admirers.
