Still In Orbit: Sputnik Chandeliers

The enduring fascination with the Sputnik chandelier, that iconic decorative symbol of the ’;60s Space Race, may best be summarized in its power to express the past, the present, and the future in one glamorous package. For the Sputnik—essentially a catchall name assigned to a light fixture with radiating, star burst-like elements—has the uncanny knack for strongly invoking a bygone era, while looking utterly contemporary and yet, somehow, magically futuristic. No wonder, then, we never get tired of looking at Sputniks. No wonder, then, once we catch a glimpse, we can’;t turn away.
